Optimum packagingBased on the i city car’s rear-midship design, the i MiEV replaces the conventional engine, transmission and fuel tank with a lithium-ion battery system, motor, inverter and other EV components.
The long wheelbase, a feature of rear-midship layout, provides space for high capacity lithium-ion batteries under the floor. It also enables the motor and inverter to be installed in the space that used to house the conventional engine and transmission. i MiEV ensures no compromise in cabin space for 4 adult passengers and good luggage space in the rear. What’s more, the rear seats fold completely flat, providing a large luggage area for moving larger items.
The installation of batteries under the floor also makes the i MiEV’s centre of gravity low, which provides a very stable driving dynamic.
High capacity batteries
EV batteries must have high energy density, and the i MiEV utilises high energy density lithium-ion batteries. A module consists of 4 cells, and 22 modules make one battery pack. Thanks to the structure of the modules, which allows them to be installed in either a vertical or transverse position, each high-capacity battery pack can fit under the floor. With these batteries installed, the target range is 100 miles (driving pattern: Japan 10-15 mode).
Highly efficient motor
The highly efficient electric motor can be built smaller than a petrol engine, while still producing high torque at low revolutions. The i MiEV’s small, light weight, highly efficient permanent magnet synchronous motor provides sportier, quieter driving and power superior to the petrol i’s turbo charged 660cc engine.
Three ways to charge
i MiEV accepts three types of battery charging systems:
Using the on-board charger, the vehicle can be charged with a standard UK 240V domestic power source in the home. All you need is a three pin plug socket and the car will charge itself from completely flat to 100% full in between 6 and 7 hours.
In addition, when quick-chargers (currently being developed by power companies) are available, it will be possible to charge the vehicle from flat to 80% full in as little as 30 minutes.
Finally, the i MiEV comes with regenerative braking, converting kinetic energy via the on board charger.
